healthy snack trays
Happy fourth, everyone! Hope you are having a good and fun day.
This summer I have been trying to make healthy afternoon snacks, at a set time, for the kids to eat. I want to avoid the "grazing" syndrome that is so easy to fall into. It's fun to try to make the arrangement appealing and colorful. Certainly, the bounty of summer fruits makes that easier. What's going onto your summer snack trays this season? I'd love to find a good veggie dip recipe if you have one.

I love this idea, esp. since my kids are big grazers around 3:30 every day. I always wish they'd try different foods, so I'll have to try the muffin tin idea to present new foods to them in a different setting.
Those look so good!
My parenting group calls those "monkey trays" after seeing a similar buffet set out at the zoo for the monkeys. :)
we did these trays too...until isaac was dx with type 1 diabetes. So, now each boy has their own little snack tray (on separated plates) with the carbs figured out. We usually have "free" foods, too - pickles, olives, and hummus is a big hit, too.
I don't have a good dip recipe but just had t say, that wonderfully, colorful array of snacks is just so appealing. How could any kid (or me!) resist?
For dip we generally do hummus (for veggies, chps, bread) or yogurt blended with berries (for fruit).
We also add nuts our the snack tray. The kids have decided they love pistachios, which mix nicely with dried cranberries for a fun twist on GORP
What appetizing trays, I've been on a health push with my kids too, but now I wanna try the muffin tray idea!
I usually make my dip out of sour cream with garlic salt because most of the ranch dressing has msg & the kind that doesn't is real expensive where we live. You can also do a nice dip with yogurt & spices your kids like.
Oooh, pretty food! Makes me want to dig in! Did you find a good veggie dip? Because Deborah Madison has a super-delicious one in Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone (it's got mango chutney and curry powder in it, and everyone I know who's eaten it loves it).

Susan--that sounds delicious! Will try to look that up!
I think I might try the muffin tray idea. Thanks! Here is a ranch recipe which is pretty good. You don't need buttermilk (I use just a tsp of vinegar with my whole milk).

You can adjust the spices and amount of milk accordingly if you want a saltier/thicker dip.
If you're looking for a good veggie dip, I recommend homemade tzatziki, or something similar. Cucumber, mint, yogurt. It's healthy and delicious. I'm not sure if it's the same where you are, but here mint and cucumbers are everywhere, so it works perfectly!
