what do you eat each week?

Dinner
What do you eat each week?  I wrote up a little schedule for us a few months ago.  It has changed a bit from previous years.  Currently for dinner we eat . . .

Monday--some sort of rice based dinner--probably our favorite type of dinner.  The photo shows the Sweet Soy Chicken from The Family Flavor.  We love this meal.  I always stir in some steamed broccoli.  Another huge rice-based favorite is the Southwest Chicken Salad from Summer Harms.  Oh, and another is her Maple-Mustard chicken.  (Love her recipes--wish she'd start blogging again).

Tuesday--pizza (this is take out.  We have a good pizza place locally).

Wednesday--soup or chili.  Love this night!

Thursday--leftovers.  If we don't have enough food left over then I whip something up from what we have on hand.

Friday--Mexican!  This is also take out from a local restaurant, or we eat there.

Saturday--date night.  Ken and I eat out and the kids usually go to my parents' house.

Sunday--"Sunday dinner."  Actually, it could be anything--likely it is something I don't have time to make during the week.  Tonight we are having chicken pot pie.  That sort of thing.  Or something special like steak.

I loved this post when I saw it on Cup of Jo.  Apparently these weekly rotations are trendy now?  The concept of eating the same thing every week used to be the butt of jokes, I think.  Personally, I love it because it is a comforting routine for the children and for us too--at it's easy to plan and do.

Do you eat the same thing every week?

  1. We don't typically eat out because finding celiac safe places that don't just offer a couple of options and get boring are hard so we eat at home most nights and keep the rotation pretty similar. There is a pasta with meat sauce in marinara, Corn Taco night (sometimes quesadillas), Seafood - typically salmon, shrimp or crab with pasta, Breakfast for dinner (Pancakes or French toast) night, Soup/Grilled Cheese, Rice bowls(typically teriyaki/coconut aminos), and Pizza night. I used to have it assigned to days but that was a little rough on me and now I just have the ingredients for the weeks worth of meals and then go from there. We also always have raw veggies with our meal either as a salad or with hummus. :)

  2. This dish looks simple, tasty and yummy. Oh I wish I could stick to my menu plan. I can plan what I want to make for the week but can never stick to say Friday night pizza. Pizza will be on that week but could be any night. Also I'm always trying new recipes too but I really think our family could benefit from sticking to a tight menu plan. It makes it easier for the adults and I think kids especially like to know what is ahead.

  3. Sarah--hats off to you! Cooking every night and gluten free at that! (not to mention dealing with type one and celiac in one family). You are amazing.

Zena--yes, I totally agree that kids like the routine of knowing what to expect. My two boys do for sure. But if it doesn't work for you, I'd let it go. I like it because it makes things easier for me. Less to figure out and decide.

  4. We do have a routine, although I never realized it... I was making pizza a few Fridays in a row, and one Friday I made pasta...My husband asked me why there was no pizza. Then he said "Monday is pasta-day, Friday pizza. Saturday you usually make chicken and Sunday it's Algerian food, like lamb. Then something Chinese, Leftovers and something new" -He was right, I never intended to have this routine, but it developed somehow. This makes menu-planning much easier, especially which cooking vegan and non-vegan food. I love routines:-)

  5. The food in the picture looks yummy, something my kids (aged 7 and 4) would like too. I noticed some interesting details (for me as a Dutch person) in the picture: the amount of ice cubes in the drinks, and the absence of knives? Do you use only a fork?
In my house, we do have some kind of a routine. I usually shop for groceries twice a week, and I plan the dinners for the coming days then. Very simple meals, as I really dislike cooking. Pasta with tomato sauce, salads, mashed potatoes with vegetables mixed in (stampot), or simply potatoes-meat-vegetables as we call it. Not very adventurous, but as long as everybody is fed, I'm happy! Oh, and to do take out or eat out three times a week would be too expensive over here.

And know to decide what we'll eat tonight....

  6. Gabi B-- I love routines too! And ours developed pretty naturally as well.

Saartje--I love hearing all your observations. I think many of us Americans are ice obsessed-- I certainly am. And yes, it is much cheaper to eat out here. We realized when Faith was in Europe last year that we really take "cheap American goods" for granted. As to the forks and knives, we do use knives if the meal calls for them, but this dish is comprised of bite sized pieces of chicken so we did not set the table with knives. I loved hearing about your Dutch meals!
