I've been reading so many good books lately. One of the things I had in mind at the beginning of the year (not a resolution, exactly) was that I wished to get more into reading. I got an iPad for Christmas, and reading on the iPad seemed to be the perfect motivator--it's such a fun novelty. I use the Kindle app for my books. Love it.
I just finished reading Bloom by Kelle Hampton. Do you know Kelle's blog? I just found it recently. She has two daughters; the younger daughter has Down syndrome. The book is about her first year of parenting her youngest daughter. Her reaction to the Down syndrome diagnosis and how she underwent so much growth and change and soul searching during that first year. Kelle is such a wonderful storyteller. I love her honesty and her zest for life. The book is super emotional, so grab a box of tissues before you read this. I found myself tearing up quite frequently. Perhaps I am the last one on the planet to read The Help (?). I finished this a few weeks ago. Loved it. I think I assumed that since it was so massively popular maybe I wouldn't like it? I worried it wouldn't be well written. But it turns out I loved the writing and the story is incredibly engaging. I loved being transported to a different place and time (1960's South). I haven't seen the movie yet, but am hoping Netflix delivers it by the weekend--it would be an excellent way to end this week. I could use a good movie.
I've just started this--I'm just a few chapters in so far, but I'm loving it. I haven't seen the movie, but I saw the trailer and that is what sparked my interest in the book. I'm not really sure what it's about yet, but I'm enjoying letting the information unfold gradually.

Ooh, thanks for the suggestions! You're only the second-to-last person to read The Help--it's still on my to-read list! I really like Kazuo Ishiguro, so I'm excited to check that one out too. I've been reading lots of short story collections: Ann Hood, Rick Bass, Shirley Jackson, a collection called "Mothers" and one called "Great Short Stories by American Women." Next up: Lorrie Moore.
Here's a new one. I haven't read 'The Help' and I'm not planning on it! Hee. Hee. Hee. I, too, have read a few good books lately after being in a reading slump for about a year. LOVE LOVE LOVE Kelle & her blog....i remember sitting at work when i 1st found her blog last year & sobbing as i read her story! she is very inspirational & i want to get that book!! have you ever read nieniedialogues.com? she also just had a book released & i'm a few chapters in & can't stop reading!!
Just started The Help funnily enough.I used to read masses but baby brain stepped in.My oldest 2 are 8 so getting back into it.I love Kelle's blog too.I love the way she laughs at silly things and yes sees beauty.I love her honesty too.Can't stand blogs that don't own up to the realities of life.I really enjoy this blog,Kelle's and a lovely English one called Attic 24.It's written by a lady who loves colour and writes it from her attic.Highly recommend it.I've currently been spending a fortune on books for the children(thank god for The Book People) so haven't bought much for me.Just bought one of the boys the Indian in the Cupboard series which he is loving.We're just about to start Emil and the Detectives at night and in a moment of madness after seeing the Kiki and Coco in Paris slide show(check it out although you'll be bursting to go to Paris) I've just bought the book for my daughter.
Actually I read One Day recently which I couldn't put down(quite an easy read),waaaay better than the film but I ended up sobbing on a beach whilst reading it so brace yourself!
oh, Never let me go. oy, love the book and the movie. its odd because you don't realize how truly dark the subject matter is while you're reading it. enjoy!
