A few weeks ago we invited friends and neighbors over to celebrate the citrus season with us (and to help us use up some of our oranges). We had a gorgeous sunny warm day and the theme of citrus turned out to be surprisingly fun. In the photo above you can get a glimpse of some of our different citrus we have growing in the yard: Cara Cara pinks, navels, blood oranges, limes and lemons.
We set out two juicers and people had lots of fun making juice blends for themselves. It was lovely the way a bit of blood orange would turn the juice pink. And so fun to blend a lot of different flavors, including the lemons and limes. I forgot to take a picture of the food but I made two cheese balls and set out crackers and some of our guests brought contributions as well, including some lemon heart shaped cookies from Trader Joe's which I thought fit the theme perfectly.
We also made pomanders and "citrus critters" (animals made with pipe cleaners, citrus, and cloves).
And we had a little scavenger hunt around the yard. (Ken made the coloring sheets ahead of time. Aren't they nice? I love his artwork).

It actually turned out to be such a cute and fun party. I'm always surprised by that! We aren't "natural" entertainers, but somehow everyone always ends up having a good time.
Next up (we hope): another "sensory party." We've done a few before, but never for more than just our family. We think it would be a fun theme for a family party as well.

HA! I love how you say you guys aren't natural entertainers, however it seems you are - much more natural than those that pay people to plan and host parties, you guys are the party. I'd love to be a guest at one of your low key rendezvous they sound perfect...well maybe not a citrus party as E is allergic to citrus (SAD I know!) but any other would be delightful I am sure.
BTW I love that first picture all the shades of yumminess in one, so fresh and clean, actually quite inspiring while still dredging through a dark winter here in WA. Enjoy your week.

Yum! I can't believe you have all of that growing in your yard (and I read half of this post waiting for the circus part of the circus party to start before I realized I was misreading "citrus" party...oops. I should go back to bed!)

I love that top picture, with all the different bright citrus colours. You're so lucky to live in a part o the world where you have such wonderful produce growing even in February!
Just one thing to say: oooooooooh! Well, I've never seen so many lemons together...I have only 2 little lemon trees still hiding from the cold in our cellar and waiting from summer to get out...and I never collected any lemon that could be eaten!! Having so many lemons and oranges in my garden would make me feel as if I lived on a tropical island inhabited with colourful birds and suntanned people dressed in swimming suits all year long :) :) I love where I live, but I think California would be a perfect match for me! ;)

What a great party! I loved every bit of it. I should try something similar, like an berry party, since citrus does not grow very well around here!

My sons will be having their birthdays again soon and would like a party this year. You've helped me head in a new direction. ღ
