oatmeal cookies

we decided to try this recipe
I'm switching to morning blogging, and it promises to be a painful transition. I have to leave really early for work, so if I blog at all in the morning, it has to be at 5 am or so. Ouch! But I'm doing it because I think it is so much better for the family. I've tried this before--and I was doing it pretty consistently--but it was back in the days when Rainer was still waking a lot. So even if I got up dutifully at 4:30 or 5 am, if the baby woke I'd be back at square one, trying to nurse a toddler and blog at the same time. It got to be really frustrating, so I switched back to night time blogging so I'd be more likely to get an uninterrupted stretch. So now I'm back to mornings--if the posts are sporadic and short for awhile, you'll know why!

The recipe above is from the January issue of Martha Stewart Living. They are doing a cute thing on the back page this year--featuring a cookie and a special way to wrap it for giving. We didn't do the special wrapping (or give them away for that matter), but I did want to try the recipe. I'm looking for the "perfect" oatmeal cookie recipe.

Rainer wanted to add M & Ms to these, which we did. They are really a rather weird addition to a cookie with raisins.

the cookies

Kind of pretty, huh? Not a popular cookie with the family, though. Rainer had a great time helping me measure the ingredients and scoop out the dough, but he didn't even want the finished product. Oh well! Next week I start 30-Day Vegan (see my sidebar for the link), but after that I still want to try different oatmeal cookies and find the best. I've started to make a little list of recipes to try.

Many times if someone wants a weird baking combo we dole out half of the recipe first then for the second half we add the mystery ingredient. That way everyone gets to try both versions. I recently tried this when my son requested lemon cake with chocolate frosting. It did NOT taste good. But he had half of a cake to enjoy.

This is the best oatmeal cookies recipe and I like to substitute crasins for the raisins.

Yum! Something I have learned over the years is that an oatmeal cookie is bad if the raisins are hard. I read on Simple Bites (I think) that if you soak your raisins in a bit of water for about 5 minutes, they plump up. Drain the water & add them to the mix. SO MUCH BETTER! My kids (4.5 & 2.5) said that having the raisins soft made all the difference!

Good luck with the morning stuff. I get up at 4:10 to go running & have some quiet time before everyone wakes up. Though lately, I've been "sleeping in" till 5:20 ish. :)

My husband loves oatmeal raisin cookies, so I make them quite a bit. I've tried substituting dark chocolate chunks and dried cherries (parents loved, kids didn't)or craisins with the grated zest of an orange (everyone loved that combo). Have fun experimenting!

I can imagine my kids wanting the M&M's too!

Goodluck with your vegan experiment. We eat a lot of vegan meals because of allergies. Vegan food can be fabulous. I love eating fresh foods, and providing flavor with different spices and sauces. You begin to realize how much people rely on cheese to flavor everything. You can find THE most killer oatmeal cookie recipe (and they are vegan!) on Kelly Rudnicki's site foodallergymama.com. They taste waaaaaay better than all the milk and egg laden ones too.

My husband is vegan and I second the comment to consider vegan oatmeal raisin cookies! I love baking and his veganism hasn't stopped me :) For ideas check out Isa Chandra Moskowitz's cookbooks - she's a legend in the vegan community!

Thanks always for your great posts!
