which magazines are you adding back in?

which magazines are you adding back in?

Awhile back I wrote a post about which magazines I was giving up. Since that time a lot of magazines have folded all together. It's kind of sad. I've enjoyed receiving fewer magazines, but now I'm finding that I actually want to add some back into my life. I recently discovered/rediscovered Whole Living and I'm liking it very much. Lots of healthy recipes in there, workout suggestions to offer inspiration, and natural beauty tips. All the photography is lovely, which is what really draws me to a magazine in the first place. I haven't subscribed to this yet, but I want to. Right now my mother is passing her copies along to me.

I'm also feeling a renewed interest in Martha Stewart Living just lately. I purchased the January and February issues and there's quite a bit in there that caught my attention. The page above is an article on cooking various whole grain breakfast cereals. In the past this magazine has turned me off a little--everything seemed so high end and unattainable! But I think they are trying to ease back on that and present more down to earth topics and activities. I've also noticed them featuring more basic crafts. This month there's a feature on counted cross-stitch which was very simple and appealing.

Yesterday I received my winter issue of 3191 quarterly. Love! This is a very small magazine but very inspiring and artistic. I loved the article on winter hiking.

And my mom recently gave me a gift subscription to Real Simple. I have mixed feelings about that magazine (because it's not really about simplicity, is it?), but this month they had a great collection of essays written by various authors about their favorite ages they remember, which I enjoyed thoroughly.

How about you? Are you finding yourself wanting to add back in some magazines?

PS--I have a Formspring now! Find the link in my sidebar.

I don't know if you can get this in the US, but I really like Marie Claire Idées. It is in French, but the photographs are just beautiful and very inspirational. Here is the website: http://www.marieclaireidees.com/

I don't have a subscription (I'm affraid it wouldn't be without problems since I am the Netherlands), just buying every single issue.

I too find I've added a couple back in - the same ones. Well, other than the 3191 Quarterly, I'll have to see if I can find it the next time I'm at the newsstand.

We recently let Newsweek go (after 10+ years!). We added Entertainment Weekly back in, which I find kind of funny since we really don't go to that many movies or watch that many TV shows. And this week I just re-subscribed to Everyday Food. Last fall I subscribed to Better Homes and Gardens too after buying several at the newsstand. Seems my mailbox is filling up again!

Eating Well (eatingwell.com) is the one I most look forward to.

I've added back in Cooking Light and Everyday Food. I order them because me niece was having a magazine drive for school. I just started getting my first copies and although I can just see those magazines start stacking up they did have some wonderful recipes. Now I just need to clip and recycle.

3191 Quarterly looks beautiful.

I couldn't agree more about Real Simple- I feel it is one big ad. I also love Whole Living- but I have been able to check out issues from my library (any issue except the current month). I have hours of fun reading through the last year's worth of magazine. I used to love Cooking Light, but find I don't so much now that they have really changed the format. I also love Yoga Journal (also from library).

Checking out magazines from the library has been a lifesaver for me- free and no clutter!

I'm still trying to catch up on a year's worth of The Sun and Orion before I'm allowed to order any more magazines, though I get a free subscription to Yoga Journal from attending a conference a few years ago and I did order 3191 on your advice. I thought about getting National Geographic for the kids (because it was only $12), but I never got around to it, which is probably a good thing, as I already have too much to read and too little time, and it would have probably exposed them to a lot of scary stuff in the world that they're too young to carry.

You know, we are really enjoying Highlights, a gift my son got for Christmas. Reading it together has made for many a happy bedtime. I am thinking of subscribing to Yes! magazine. Spirituality & Health, though, is my all-time favorite, and I recommend it to everyone.

can't give up Sunset and This Old House. I used to get Martha Stewart and need to try that again. Thanks for the reminder!

No. I'm so glad to have given up the magazines I had. I still buy Country Living. though quite expensive, but great blogs (like this one)more than make up for reading about the latest antics of Cheryl Cole and Katie Price. Thanks!

Andrea, my kids received Nat. Geo for kids and I was very disapointed by the content...almost all ads or media driven content. Such a shame as you'd think they'd have so much more to offer.
I just strolled by the huge magazine section of our local bookstore and thought...nope, I'd rather spend my time reading blogs, LOL! I'm sick of the clutter that stacks of Whole Living, Yoga, the occational Simple Living created. They were too full of beautiful inspiration and information to toss, and yet I never seemed to get around to cutting out what I wanted to save. Trying hard just to say NO. ;-) Must. Stay. Strong! LOL!

I remember your post about which magazines are you letting go of. I cannot believe I said Real Simple was a favorite- WHAT WAS I THINKING????? The only magazine I get is Better Homes & Gardens. Is it me, or has that magazine gotten smaller? I have stopped buying decorating magazines that cost $7 a pop, & use the internet as a guide for the look I am going for in my home.

I stopped buying magazines altogether for a while there. Not just cost, but I wasn't savoring them.

I just bought my first copy of Whole Living because of you (didn't you mention it before?).

I am very wanty over 3191Q. I may have to take the plunge. (The problem is I want the back issues too...not that there are so very many!)

I haven't really stuck to one magazine faithfully in over a year. My Living collection was way out of control, so I sorted through all my magazines and kept what I really wanted. I go a little nuts around the holidays and buy every food mag that comes out. I just bought the subscription of 3191 and I don't know why I didn't do that sooner. I have been wanting to check out the Whole Living but haven't yet.

i havent had any magazine subscriptions in about three years and just recently added Bust and Everyday Food back in. also comtemplating Brain, Child.

i feel the same way you do about Real Simple. a friend passes hers on to me and while ill occassionally come across a well written article, i dont feel as if the magazine itself is simplistic enough for me. in fact, i think its downright materialistic and does more to make me feel bad than good.

I am still mourning Cookie. Although it was filled with items that were too rich for my blood, I loved the format and the layout. I am loving Better Homes and Gardens of all things. They just seem to be hitting it on the mark with me lately.

dear MB,

i too have mixed feelings on real simple mag. i subscribed for a year, but stopped after i could not reconcile their ads with the simple lifestyle they were trying to promote.

but i do miss the recipes and household tips (especially the finding new uses for old things section). oh, well.
