children's play area freshen-up

I rearranged the children's play area on Saturday and we are really enjoying it! I moved out a small bookcase and it somehow seemed to open up the area quite a bit. The boys gravitated towards it more this morning as they woke up. I couldn't resist taking a bunch of pictures.
I played with them too and we had a really fun time. I'm realizing how fast they are growing up, with Rainer having turned four last month, and with Dieter in kindergarten. I really really want to carve out more time for this sort of fun morning. I love that they still want to play with their mama.
The "thanks" banner is in the play area this year.
When I moved the bookcase out I realized it makes much more sense to have it over here with the other bookcase. I also put a little chair and the autumn book basket. Dieter really likes this little "library" area. I also freshened up the book selection, taking out a bunch that we're not using. It's so much better when the books are not crowded. It makes it easier to use the ones we love.

I'm finding that even just a little re-arranging feels so uplifting. It's silly, really, but so fun.

The heat wave here finally broke and now we are having fallish weather. Hooray! It's even raining right now. I hope you had a fine fallish weekend as well!

Love your banners. The newly rearranged space looks great. You're right, rearranging a space feels so good. I love how it changes how you live in the space.

I think a clean up is good for everyone and it's been on my to-do list for ages. I like how everything looks!

Your house always looks so warm and cozy (and clean). Thanks or the inspiration. I think I'll make a banner today.

Very nice! My kids are somehow magically more drawn to their toys when everything is cleaned up and rearranged...it's like a whole new space for them.

I was wondering if you only have wooden toys for the kids? I am trying to get my husband to switch all of our toys over. Do they ever play with hot wheels or movie characters? We are about half and half with our toys and I find that my son is so creative with the wooden toys and always frustrated with the plastic. Any suggestions that I could use to encourage my family to switch?

Sarah--we do have mostly wooden toys for the boys, but a few plastic ones remain. I think part of living "in the world" and the boys attending public school is that they are going to want what the other children have, including plastic junk. I don't like it, but I do accept that that's part of the package for us. They do have a bin of plastic Star Wars characters that they love (and have watched the Star Wars movie--just the first one with fast forwarding through the scary bits). But I try to emphasize more non-commercial type play and I think it's working since we don't have TV. I hope that answers your question!

I love your boys' play area - it's so warm & cozy! I often rearrange my children's toys - it seems to renew their interest in their toys. It's also a good time to weed out & donate some things, esp. with the holidays right around the corner.
