some favorite halloween books

I'm not a huge Halloween person, but my boys are sure excited. Here are some of the books we are enjoying right now:
The Witches' Supermarket. This is my all time favorite Halloween book. A little girl stumbles into a supermarket that is intended only for witches and finds all sorts of interesting things inside. There are lots of visual jokes such as produce shelves that stock "apples with worms" and "apples without worms" (the wormy apples are more expensive), sour milk in the produce section, and baby bats in the meat section. But when the witches find out that the girl Martha is not a witch she has to make an exciting escape. The illustrations are so fun.
Angelina's Halloween. We don't have any of the other Angelina books but this one is pretty cute. I especially love the pictures of inside Angelina's house--especially their beautiful old farmhouse kitchen.
I found this one thrifting the other day; it shows bunnies going about their various Halloween traditions and celebrations. It's very low key, which I love, and again, the illustrations are very engaging.
Pumpkin Moonshine is a favorite from Tasha Tudor. A little girl has to go chasing her pumpkin down the hill when she lets go of it. I love the illustrations here too!

I'm happy to say that we are mostly ready in terms of the boys costumes this year. I'll be sure to take a picture on Sunday and post it!

JT loved (and probably still does, but we haven't checked it out from the library yet this year) Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White. Winnie the Witch was also a favorite. Then there's The Teeny Tiny Ghost, and Bone Soup... Can you tell my son loves Halloween stories? We haven't seen The Witches' Supermarket yet, we will look for that one.

Great post! The Witches Supermarket is one of my FAVORITES. I will have to look at some of the others from your list. Another one to find at a library is Mouseskin's Golden House. My first graders loved this story. I read it after Halloween when we started thinking about what would happen to the post-Halloween jack-o-lantern pumpkins. I think you and your boys would love this story. :)http://www.amazon.com/Mousekins-Golden-House-Edna-Miller/dp/0671669729

Cute! I'll have to see if the library has the witche's supermarket. We just checked out Pumpkin Moonshine, but the boys haven't shown much interest in it yet. We like "The Thirteen Nights of Halloween" (a spoof on the 12 Days of Christmas...they learned the whole song a tschool) "The Vanishing Pumpkin" by Tony Johnston, with illustrations by Tomi dePaola, who I love (it's a very funny, fast-moving, surprising story) and my very favorite is Hist Whist by e.e. cummings with incredible illustrations by Deborah Koogan Ray. I've just started on costumes, but I don't have a lot to do, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Thank you for sharing! I love finding books to request at library and then put on my amazon wishlist if we fall in love with them.

Tasho Tudor is a favorite here.

Goodnight Goon is a great Book. It's done to kind of mimic Goodnight Moon!

Ooo - Pumpkin Moonshine! I loke the sound of that one.

It is hard to find a good Halloween book for children. I worked in children's publishing for almost 9 years and still can't recommend many.

One that comes to mind is Room on a Broom - author slips my mind at the moment. I found it at the library this past week.

Thanks for sharing, Nicole

A must add to your list is Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman.
