only apples

I've been trying to eat only apples whenever I feel like snacking. I can't say I've entirely stuck with it, but it has made me think twice or thrice before mindlessly eating crackers, chips, or other less desirable snacks. What do you eat for snacks? Or do you avoid snacking altogether?? My ideal snack would probably be a slice of some rustic homemade cake with a cup of tea on the side.

this is so funny to me because every night between dinner and bedtime, i crave snacks snacks snacks and my husband (who does the same thing) always says that if we're actually hungry, an apple should satisfy, so we should ask ourselves if we would want an apple. if we do, then eat one. if we don't, it's not hunger, it's mindless boredom. tonight i had chocolate peanut butter baskin robbins ice cream and potato chips. i wasn't hungry - i was watching fashion police on DVR. ;)

That is so true jen about the apple. Michael Pollan says something like that! I like to snack on fresh fruit, spoonfuls of peanut butter, nuts and seeds, dried fruit, yogurt, a piece of buttered toast....I am a snacker, sheesh!

I am a new reader of your blog, but I love it. You have created such a lovely space:) Thanks for sharing.

Great plan. I like to sprinkle cinnamon on apple slices, and pair it with a cup of tea. Also enjoy dipping apple slices in all natural peanut butter. Thanks for reminding me. No more popcorn for an evening snack!

Apples for me too, or during the day often a weight watchers cookie or bar (which are YUM!).

we have a rule at our house that after 8pm it's fruit, veggies or popcorn. I feel like that allows enough variety without too much restriction. My husband eats a late night snack every night as a habit with his type 1 diabetes treatment so I feel that it's more fun to join him however I can than to just forgo it.

Sometimes I really need some protein in my snacks, especially since we've drastically cut back on the amount of meat we eat. I find that peanut butter (or other nut butters) are so good on sliced apples or bananas. We also like popcorn as a treat around here, popped on the stovetop with coconut oil and sea salt, sometimes a little nutritional yeast on top for extra flavor.

I try to keep almonds around for snacking, but I've found I can't leave the can open while snacking or we just keep eating. It is better to just take a handful out into a small bowl and put the rest away in the cupboard.

Mostly we just try to keep chips and crackers out of the house. If they are there, we eat them but when they are gone I don't miss them.

Good idea, though I'd much rather have cake and tea than an apple, too. I've been trying to eat sugar free and junk snack free, but sometimes I get a bag of yogurt covered raisins (the fruit juice sweetened kind) or little energy bites and just devour those till they're gone. Over the summer raw carrots, green beans, cherry tomatoes and berries made great snacks, but not sure what to look forward to for winter fare.

I love tortilla chips and organic salsa. I tell myself that the salsa is fat-free, at least. :/

Ha! Just before I popped over, I grabbed an apple INSTEAD of the yummy lemon cake a friend brought over last night!

I just read, "if you're not hungry enough to eat an apple, then you're not hungry"...I think it was from one of Mark Bittman's posts.

I adore the Honey Crisp apples that are around in the fall. Occasionally I'll munch on a Granny Smith (I love the tartness.) I was actually getting kind of bored with our snacks here, it's always the same: goldfish crackers, cheese & crackers, grapes etc. I am hoping to get some inspiration from others! :)

I try to go for Trader Joe's reduced fat string cheese when I want a snack. Or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. :)

I am still thinking about what recipe for a "rustic cake" you might have in your recipe box that I'd love to see.
I have been snacking on almonds and dried mango (just mango) from TJs. Everybody else has too because they are always selling out.

oh my goodness, I am terrible at snacking. And being a stay at home mama you are pretty much in the kitchen half of the day. I too, try to stick with fruit, apples, oranges, and sometimes a few others mixed in. It hardly ever works. I LOVE chips, chips and salsa, chips and guac, and one of my big problems is that I an emotional snacker. M goes down for a nap (finally) and I feel like I deserve a bowl of chips and processed cheese dip, ridiculous, right? I do try, but sometimes my emotions just get the best of me!
