We watched this movie for the second time last night. Dieter actually requested it, which surprised me. The first time we watched it (a few months ago) I thought it might be a little hard for him to follow, with all the flashbacks, mythology, and Irish accents and such. He must have "gotten" it though because he requested it for last night all of his own accord (Friday night is movie night and his request. Rainer gets to choose a movie on Tuesday nights--lately he only wants Little Travelers Germany, which is fine by me). The Secret of Roan Inish is about a little girl who goes to live with her grandparents after her mother has died. There's lots of storytelling and myth interwoven about Roan Inish, the island where the family used to dwell, and about Jamie, the girl's baby brother who went missing when his cradle floated out to sea. There is also a Selkie, a magical creature who transforms from a seal into a beautiful woman. I love so many things about this movie: the beautiful scenery and green land and the ocean, the costumes, especially of the little girl (Fiona), and the beautiful sets and props--the quilt on her bed, the grandmother's teapot, the thermos of tea Fiona brings to her grandfather, the way her picnic sandwich is wrapped in brown paper. I also love all the scenes where Fiona and her cousin do real work to repair the cottages on Roan Inish. The children know how to make mud bricks, repair thatched roofs, mix up white wash to paint the interiors. It's all very heartening and makes me want to teach my children how to do real things. The soundtrack is lovely too. Even Dieter commented that he liked the music.
If you haven't seen the movie I highly recommend it for its beauty and inspiring story.

This Is one of my favorite movies and a fave soundtrack. We watched it earlier this summer as a family and my boys loved it, too. :)

Is this the movie where the oil representative is sent to the island or am I thinking of another beautiful setting/story?
Okay...I googles it and it's Local Hero. I highly recommend it and think that I remember it being suitable for children.

Just found you post about this sweet movie. My husband, who is not into mythology at all, loved it and told me I had to watch it. When I got a chance to see it, I was entranced. I even put a copy in my daughter-in-law's Christmas stocking that year.
