At the beginning of the summer I was surprised and pleased to be contacted by a publisher asking if I'd like a copy of Eating for Beginners for myself and one for my readers. Why yes, I would! I took this book with me when we had our little vacation up north and it was the perfect in-car, vacationy read. The book is about the author's food experiences for one year of her life. She spends the entire year working in a very fancy all-local, all-seasonal New York restaurant (amazingly, they actually let her cook some of the food, even though she's not a chef) and at the same time spends some days checking out the farms and sources where the restaurant food comes from. She visits vegetable farms but also farms with animals, rides on trucks with those who supply the food to local restaurants and farmer's markets, and even bravely goes out on a fishing boat! It's interesting to see how all of these elements are interconnected. The most interesting for me, though, was getting a peek backstage at the fancy restaurant. It's insane back there and not for the faint of heart!
I have one copy to give away. If you think you'd enjoy reading this, leave a comment on this post. I'll "draw" a name Saturday night!
And, related to yesterday's post:
:: this was the book I was particularly smelling at the beginning of the summer. Wonderful new book smell!
:: for those of you asking for the spicy zucchini bread recipe, it comes from Everyday Food issue #6 (gotta love those back issues!) and you can find it here. Happy eating (and smelling!)
