scenes from my birthday

{packed: Rainer's quilt and clothes, hot coffee, purse, shopping bags for later thrifting}
It was a lovely birthday that started quite early in the morning as we gathered everything together for a trip to Santa Barbara. My birthday happened to coincide with Rainer's regularly scheduled chemo, so we started the day with chemo.
He grabbed his teddy bear on the way out the door.
Once every three months he has a lumbar puncture, which was today. He was brave and did great. By this time we practically take it in stride. It is certainly nice to have it over with each time, though. His nurse is one we love: Paralee. She used to come to the house to give him chemo too. She's wonderful.
After, we had breakfast at Crushcakes. It's not just cupcakes, they have healthy food too . . .
And after Crushcakes we had fun at the park. As you can see, he recovers very fast!
There was some thrifting after the park and I found this vintage-y suitcase. Love it! I have been wanting one of these and they don't show up that commonly around here.
I also got a vintage-y sheet and some striped shirts for the boys.

Ken made me dinner and we had cake and presents. Thank you to my sweet family for making the day so fun!

That Rainer is such a sweet, brave little boy. Love him! I'm glad you were able to get some celebrating in after Rainer's chemo. The suitcase is amazing. The thrifting fairies were kind to you for your birthday. :) Happy birthday, Mary Beth! (PS. This may explain why we have so much in common. I'm a June baby too.)

Rainer's looking so grown up now, especially with that lovely head of hair! Glad to see you all had a good day, even if it started with chemo.

What a sweet boy you have. I've had my eye on that mushroom bag for awhile! And I love your suitcase too.

Happy Birthday to you! Looks like a wonderful day spent with the little ones you love.

And who doesn't love a good thrifing find, makes any day special in my eyes. I picked up a lone pillowcase this week in that same exact sheet pattern. Love the tonal butterflies!

I knew it was coming up just wasn't sure what day.
Hope you had a good day even if chemo was in the birthday plans this year.

When I was a child, I had a suitcase JUST like that except that it had more red flowers than blue. I so wish I (or my mom) had kept it. Fun find!

How funny my mom has those same sheets! Also some of your dishes, the flowery mikasa ones, my mom has. I get a smile on my face every time I see them in your posts, because when I visit my mom (I'm in N CA she's in San Diego area) we use them. :-) I love the suitcase. Have you ever posted tips on thrifting before? I'm about ready to venture out when our girls go back to school and wondered if you have any good tips?

Glad you had a nice bday. Crushcakes looks great. Love a good cupcake! :-)

Happy Birthday. I hope you have had a lovely day.
Underneath this post, in 'you might also like' was a link to a Beatrix Potter Day post... which, by coincidence was posted on my birthday 2008. So I had a read of it as I love Beatrix Potter. I think I may well be 'affronted' by my children quite a bit from now on! You said though you were disappointed by the day and I wondered why? I don't suppose you can remember now?

Happy Birthday! Aren't kids the most amazing people in the world? Rainer just trusts that you will take care of him and love him- that is why he can bounce back like he can. You are a strong mama and he is a strong, vibrant little boy. Love to see him so healthy.

Debs--hmm, I can't totally remember what disappointed me about the Beatrix Potter day--maybe long lines? cheesy crafts? I tend to have too high of expectations I think. Dieter had a good time and we got ice cream, so it was all good in the end.

Family of 4--yes! I did do a thrifting post: http://saltandchocolate.blogspot.com/search?q=thrifting+tips
Maybe I'll do another soon--I see now that I didn't really give any "tips" just more my philosophy behind thrifting.

Thanks everyone for wishing Rainer and I well! You're all so sweet.
