what's in the fall book basket?

Our fall stack of books is rather slim. A few more will come out when Ken gets the Halloween box out of storage (Pumpkin Moonshine is in there). For now we are enjoying some generally fall-ish books from the bookshelf.

Miss Bindergarten gets Ready for Kindergarten--it has a back to school theme so it's in there. This is one of my favorite "mainstream" type of books. Miss Bindergarten is a dog--a kindergarten teacher--and I love all the "behind the scenes" glimpses of her getting her classroom ready for the first day of school. There is something just so charming about the illustrations. And the little boys love this too.

Child of Faerie, Child of Earth--I wrote about this one here. Dieter is back to not liking it! But it is perfect for the fall basket so it's in there.

Rainy Morning--we all love this one. Daniel Pinkwater has such a great sense of humor. I wrote about this one a bit last year.

Owl Babies--this one is Rainer's book. I just think it has a fallish look and feel to it. A favorite.

Woody, Hazel, and Little Pip--love this one. Dieter received it last year from the Green Pumpkin. I'm delighted to say that this is one "mama style" book that is also "Dieter style," which is to say, this is the type of book I love to buy and read for them and Dieter likes it just as well. Hooray! The plot of the book is that two little "acorn" boys go riding off on a leaf on a windy fall day and Mr. Squirrel and the hazelnut daughter have to go find them. When they are found there is a party, but in the meanwhile they get into some sticky situations with gnomes and trolls. My kind of thing totally. The illustrations are fantastic.

And I recently ordered this one from Amazon. It's lovely--we used to have it when Faith was little. I love the illustrations and the text is rhythmic and sing-songy in a wonderful way.

What are your favorite fall books? The Green Pumpkin may need some ideas for this year's bundle. . .

I wrote about my favorite fall books here: http://remainsofday.blogspot.com/2009/09/welcoming-fall.html

Woody, Hazel and Little Pip looks adorable. My kiddos love the Elsa Beskow books (especially the mini versions...so fun to have a tiny book for tiny hands!)

I know it's more of a Halloween book, but we love: Room on the Broom.

Mary Beth,

I love your blog -- it's beautiful and realistic at the same time -- just like life itself. Some fall books we enjoy are Ox-Cart Man, Johnny Appleseed by Reeve Lindbergh, AWESOME paintings by Kathy Jakobsen and Now It's Fall by Lois Lenski (vintage goodness).

In our fall book shelf:
Christopher's Harvest Time by Elsa Beskow, Owl Babies (our favorite), Too Many Pumpkins, Spookly the Square Pumpkin, Little Bear, Apples Apples Apples by Nancy Wallace, and Hocus and Pocus go to the Circus by Fran Manushkin.

I love fall! I'll be looking up a bunch of these books to add to our collection. :)

Blessings,

Love the seasonal book baskets! How do you keep the books together? My little one carries books all over the house, car, places we go, you name it.

we have just taken out a big pile from the library. I read Woody, hazel and little pip to my preschool kids yesterday and they loved it. We are also loving Wild Child, The Little Yellow Leaf by Karin Berger, Leaf Man, Autumn Bear and I See Animals Hiding. And I'm taking notes here, because there have been lots of lovely suggestions!

We don't have a basket, but a couple of Halloween favorites are Room on the Broom, The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything, and The Bake Shop Ghost. My girls (3 and 6) LOVE these. Thanks for the suggestions!

Favorite Halloween book: My Monster Mama Loves Me So -- not about Halloween, but the monsters make it fun for Fall.

Not specifically a Fall book, but it always seemed Fallish to me: Little Fur Family by Margaret Wise Brown. A favorite from my childhood.

All around favorite of my 3-year-old twins (and me) is When the Root Children Wake Up retold by Audrey Wood, about all the seasons.

We have Miss Bindergarten and were lucky enough to get it signed by the author! Such a treat. This is on my must-buy list:
