I have been waiting for this

Representational drawings from little Dieter! For some reason I had set my mind to worrying about him being so reluctant to draw. As it turns out, he just needed more time. Now he has filled up an entire art notebook and is drawing on every random sheet of paper he can find!

{sea creatures are a favorite subject}

{as are volcanoes--lots and lots of volcanoes}

Why is it so important to me that he loves to draw? I think that if he can feel free and confident in his artistic expression right now, it will lead to greater creativity and problem solving later in life--and so much comes down to creativity, doesn't it? All those Nobel prize winners we have been hearing about lately who have made so many important discoveries, and who are so very impressive to me, are all very creative people. And now Dieter is on his way . . .

Go Dieter! It really is about being confident in your creations. I love all of his sea creatures!

I love his little sea creatures! My son turns 4 tomorrow (!!) and is just starting representational drawing. It's so exciting, isn't it?

How fantastic, love the sea creatures. My six year old will colour on any piece of paper he can get his hands on. I've taken to making little folded paper books so he can do complete stories wherever he is.

Nice. I have a reluctant artist too, so this is good to hear.

Do you have any tips for the reluctant drawer? My nearly 4 yr old seems scared to draw, that it wont be as good as his older brother's. I just want him to have fun with it.

so cute! I love kids drawings. Liam has just started telling me that the scribbles he makes are actual things, it's so neat. He draws bugs - oval shaps with lots and lots of lines for legs.

So exciting! I am still waiting here. My boy had about two days of drawing monsters and then it was back to scribbles. An interesting process. I am so keen on having a kid who loves to draw too. These are great- the jellyfish are amazing!

Thanks for your sweet comments, everyone. We are really having fun with this--especially Dieter of course, but it is so fun for me too to see what he comes up with next.

Samantha S--no, I don't have any special tips except that in this last year or so (since I wrote the other post worrying about it) I didn't make a big deal about him drawing or show my concern, just acted really low key and provided some notebooks and art supplies and just made them available. Good luck! I totally agree with you--I just want them to enjoy it.

My 4 1/2 year only scribbled all over until a month before his 4th birthday. Without prompts he just wrote his name. Plenty of airplane and volcano since. His teenage sister sat and drew sweet pictures early. I changed my idea that it was a boy thing but he needed patience in representing his ideas with pride. Learning to read requires this sort of click as well; I believe.
