food reading

I've been enjoying reading about nutrition, lately. Ever since I read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle last year (I don't think I ever did a specific blog post about it, but I loved it--and highly recommend it) I've been very interested in the question of what we should it and where our food should come from. Over the summer I read In Defense of Food and loved that too. Now I'm on to Real Food by Nina Planck. This one is interesting because the author grew up as the daughter of intellectuals who decided to leave their university professor jobs and go live on a farm. She grew up eating a very local and seasonal diet of lots of veggies, raw milk and local meat. She thrived on that but in adulthood decided to become a vegan. Now she's back to eating what she calls "real food" (veggies, raw milk, and well-raised meat) and says she feels so much better on that diet. This book is basically in line with the Nourishing Traditions school of thought but so much funner to read--I recommend it if you wanting to learn more about this type of eating. The second book The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw is totally different. I've been reading a number of "raw" books over the summer (all library books, as are both of these) because I'm interested in the benefits of raw eating. I would never become 100% raw or actually nowhere near there but would like to add maybe a little more "raw" to my diet. The Complete Idiot's guide sort of goes along with that--stating that even if you just add in a bit more raw you can still gain some benefits. I've just started this one--it looks good. I'll post here if I make any of the recipes.

I love Barbara Kingsolver. I have read most of her books and loved them all. I follow a vegan diet and am healthier than I have ever been. I love to read about nutrition as well.

Thanks for the review of Real Food-I enjoy Nourishing Tradition's train of thought but it can be quite daunting! So,I think I need to find a copy of Real Food!

Some books to add to my reading list!

I am on a quest to eat healthier, and have cut back on my meat intake. Now....to cut back on ice cream and Chessman cookies!

I love your jar with rocks! I always find inspiration here! :)

These look good. I wanted to recommend Nina Planck's other book which I'm reading right now called real food for mother and baby. It's VERY good and so simple. I really enjoy your blog!
