images from our solstice

Summer solstice was cool and rainy this year. That is pretty unusual and we enjoyed it so much. The rain was over by the time we had the tea--it was just pleasantly cloudy so we could sit outside and enjoy. There will be plenty of sun soon so we are not worried about that at all.

The chicken salad from Bluebirdbaby was excellent. I'll be making it many times in the future, I'm sure. Those little crumb cakes were delicious as well--not sure why they sink in the middle--they always do--but they are so yummy I'm not too concerned. (The crumb cakes are from this sweet book.)
Jacob is home from college. Isn't he awesome?
Faith with her cousin Katherine, visiting from Colorado.
Gam and Papa!
And this from earlier in the day: Dieter and Rainer went on a walk in the rain with their daddy while I cooked the food. On the solstice, Ken measures the children. Both of the little boys had grown a lot! So happy about that.

Yes, he's totally getting hair now! We are so excited, and it feels wonderful--we love to stroke his downy head.

Love this post! It's so sweet and fun to make a party for the solstice! Here we have fires, etc... to celebrate!
Lovely day you had!
Thanks so much again for sharing your family joy!

That looked lovely! You really made such a wonderful spread for the family. I haven't hosted a party in ages--I tend to get too stressed hoping for perfection.

Pork pies are very common here in the UK--we have them on the occasional walking trip.

Can you put a link up for your raspberry bars? They look yummy and I'm hoping I'm going to have a glut of raspberries this year.

We passed by a highway about 15 miles from Stonehenge today--the road leading to it was closed due to the amount of people already there this morning!
Happy Solstice!

I love reading your blog! Every post is beautiful and inspiring. Can you recommend a book or source for learning about the solstices? I'm interested in celebrating them with my family. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for all the solstice love.

Anonymous--I love learning more about the Solstice too. I do have some book recommendations--just look these up on Amazon, okay? Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. "Festivals, Family and Food", "All Year Round", and a novel "I Capture the Castle" (in which there is a wonderful section where the protagonist celebrates midsummer with a special ritual--it's wonderful).

Elizabeth--yes, I will post those raspberry bars this week.
