springtime centerpiece

I did this last year too, but it wasn't timed to Easter. This year I'm delighted to have a basket of fresh grass perfectly timed to nestle Easter eggs into. The little boys love it too. Growing a basket of grass is super easy and so fun! Instructions are here.
Here is how it looked just a few days ago. It's amazing how fast it grows!
And here is how it looked as of this morning. Crazy tall. We decided to "mow" it before putting the eggs it--just trim with scissors. Dieter loved trimming the grass. It is really fun.
And here it is freshly cut and with the eggs nestled in. We didn't get around to dyeing our eggs yet. These ones are blown out and saved from years past. They last basically forever, until they break. We have another whole basket full of them on the mantle. So handy for "instant" Easter decorations.

So this evening I was picking up eggs individually and spraying under them, to water the grass, and I was telling the little boys, "I hope I can keep this grass green until Easter." Ken said, "you can keep it green until 2030 as long as you keep watering it." "But it gets so leggy and ugly," I said. He said, "it starts out as a little kitten--you can't keep it from growing into a cat." I loved that analogy so much. I never realized that that is why I don't like the grass anymore after a few weeks. It grows into mature grass!

Also, a big shout out to Jacob. I had to call him at college for tech support--I almost lost all my photos from the weekend again! Luckily, he helped me find them. Hooray! Otherwise, I would have been very grumpy. It is so nice to have a big nineteen year old who can help me from college. Very proud of that darling boy.

Thanks for the reminder. We used to do this at my house as i was growing up. Sometimes we even used fresh moss cut from the forest in one of our walks.
have a great week!

That centerpiece is SO cute. I'll bet Dieter had a great time "mowing" the grass. :)

What a great idea. I may have to go get some grass seed and do this with the kids.

That looks so great! Oh, I will have to try to remember it for next Easter (a little late for us here now as we will be away over the weekend). What a wonderful way to present your eggs.
