Mom Snacks

It's so important for us busy mamas to take care of ourselves so we can be healthy and energetic for our families. Yet, too often, is it easy to eat unhealthy things? It is for me. I was reading an interesting post (here) about this same topic, and the author raised some interesting questions, like do you feel guilty stocking up on snacks for yourself? And do you hide your stash from the rest of the family? I never feel guilty buying food for myself because I know I need it and I know I need to stay healthy to be a good wife and mom. But do I hide my stash? No, generally not, only the chocolate. That's because the boys aren't supposed to eat chocolate. I do share with the big people (Faith and I both have sweet tooths). I've been making a lot of guacamole lately for an after school snack. Avocados are in season locally, and the new health clerk that works with me in my office has a tree! and she has brought me several avocados (what a great gift--I love them so). I like to cut up tomatoes to eat on the side. These are from our garden, which is extra gratifying.
This is my absolute favorite work snack: Triscuits (which are whole grain, by the way), string cheese and fruit. What do you like to snack on?

Yum, I love me some guacamole or just spooning out an avocado! My daily snacks are normally a green apple, maybe with some peanut or homemade almond butter...and sometimes I finish off my green smoothie from breakfast if I didn't that morning. For some strange reason I'm hungry now so I better run and get some breakfast :)!

Good afternoon! I am one of those that feels guilty about buying things that i like or things i know only i will eat! Now that i'm not working i'm finding it really , really difficult to eat lunch! I get hunger pains at about 3pm and think "oh yes i haven't eaten' but at that point its too late because i'm on the school run so have to grab something like ginger biscuits or a slice of bread!
Your blog however may change that! Your food photos are always so clear and so, so, SO appetizing that I am going to copy you today! I hava guacamole here(shop bought i'm afraid) and tomatoes...and there is a bag of my swedish krisprolls lurking in the cupboard. So..my stomach thanks you for reminding me to feed it!

Have a lovely day.....

we are a no sweets in the house family. Only because I have no self control. That isn't to say we don't get them. Christmas time is our big treat season. My fav. snack...with what is on hand right now I would say a big spoon of peanut butter...yum

An avocado tree!!What a blessing and how generous of her to gift them to you.
Now what I like to snack on and what I should snack on are a different story.
I like to snack on salt and vinegar pringles.AND I absolutely MUST lick all of the salt off first!yes weird,I know.
When I am being aware of what I am eating and making the right choices,I like red pepers whole, like an apple.Same with tomatoes.White bean dip, hummus and figs, figs I could eat until they are coming out of my ears. With the occasional bite of very sharp British (if I can find it,if not cabot make a decent one)cheddar.

Oh and yes,I do hide my chocolate otherwise when I went to get some after a L-0-N-G day and found on an empty wrapper there would be a tantrum of all tantrums!!

My favorites right now are homemade curry roasted chickpeas (lots of recipes online), tamari roasted almonds (purchased at the co-op), raw veges dipped in hummus and string cheese. When I need something sweeter, I mix a blob of peanut butter with cocoa powder and sweetener (agave nectar, sugar, or honey) to make sort of a fudgy treat.

I love the color of home grown tomatoes BTW. I had a favorite snack that I was loving last week and for the life of me, I cant remember what it was........... I think I am brain dead. Or maybe the rich color of those tomatoes threw me off. Its all I can think of now, sweet home grown tomatoes. yummy

Yes, guacamole is near the top of the list for me, too.

I also love hummus. I have an awesome recipe for homemade that I used to gobble up daily but it's giving me a little heartburn now that I'm in my 3rd trimester. :(

Right now ;m loving a whole wheat english muffin with cream cheese and strawberry jam from the farmer's market. Mmmm.

Lucky you. Here on the Chesapeake Bay we don't have avacado trees. I love avacado with just a little ceasar dressing mixed together, mmm
I love apples and Sunbutter (sunflower seed butter) It tastes just like peanutbutter but since we have an allergic child our house is nut-free (unless you count ocassional visitors or myself). My all time favorite sinful "snack" is soft black licorice. I love your pictures. I think I am going to grab an apple now.
