Beautifying the Mantle

For such a long time our mantle has been nothing but a junk collector. It is so frustrating but I never got up the energy or ambition to do anything about it. Finally, on Saturday I was inspired to pretty it up. This was an exercise in resourcefulness for the 30 Days of Nothing. This is all just stuff I found around the house and put together in a new way. (This may well end up being my most creative act of September since the crafting is basically non-existent). That green pitcher is what Ken got me for my birthday 2 years ago--I do love it and its cheery color.
All poetry books, which will hopefully inspire me to read more poems to the children.
My idea is to change this every month to keep it from stagnating. Otherwise it will give itself over to being a junk collection area once again.
At night I lit the candles and it was just a little bit magical. The first candlelight of the fall season.

Looks pretty! I'm trying to get motivated to add beautifying touches throughout the house - I have never been much of a decorator, so if I just declutter something, I feel pretty good about how it looks. I like your ideas.

I love the warm glow of the candles :)

Rhoda at Southern Hospitality just wrote a blog post about decorating a mantel...might give you some inspiration for next month or beyond:)

I have a LONG mantel, that goes the entire width of the room that it is in. I can really only decorate it right over the hearth, otherwise it will look like a garage sale display or something lol.

It is also right smack where we enter the home from our garage...so it is also the perfect spot to place things down and forget about them...not so much me, but my husband...so I have to keep behind him from doing that...if only he would keep behind me in my trouble spots: the kitchen counter and dining room table! lol

What a pretty mantle! We just recently repainted our living room and I have been hesitant to return the decorations to our mantle for fear of it also returning to a junk collection. I love the idea of changing it every month!

BTW, your boys are so handsome... love the photos of brotherly love!

looks really pretty, I try to keep my mantle nice, but it always seems to revert to being an out of reach place to put stuff my little guys cant have!
