Back from Back to School NIght

It's late Thursday and I've returned from my school's Back to School Night. Since I have a long-ish commute, I didn't come home after school, so it's been a long day. I will say, I had a novel afternoon--I went to my parent's house (they live closer to my work than we do), had a shower, actually got a chance to do my hair and beautify myself (a rare occurance!) and inbetween, got to put my feet up and knit and read a magazine. I usually don't get a chance to relax like that after work, so it was nice in its own way, although it's hard to go the whole day without seeing the family. They survived just fine without me though, it seems. All is quiet here.
On my mind right now--the advent calendar. I can't decide if I want to do random little gifts as I've always done, for the teens and the toddlers, everyone included, or make it a toddler-only advent calendar. I have this idea that for the toddlers-- I could make it a "Christmas Village" theme in which each item is a trinket or figurine or prop for an informal village like this one. The toddler could add the item to the village scene and arrange and re-arrange it as they saw fit. I really like the idea of doing it that way, but then the teens wouldn't be included. I mean, they could be, but I don't think they would really get a kick out of adding an item to the village, whereas I think the toddlers would. I'll have to ponder this.

Also, Faith's school dance program is having a big fundraiser on a Saturday in October, including dance classes that anyone can sign up for. I'm really excited because I'm going to sign up for all 6 classes! I don't have a dance outlet in my life at all, but I love to dance and used to take classes all the time, before babies. Faith is going to do all the classes too and is happy for me to join her. They'll be outdoors, so very informal and fun, I think. I'm excited.

Happy Friday and weekend to you!

I'm really taken with the idea of adding to a winter scene! We have a windowsill in the breakfast room that would be perfect...Mmmm. Lots to think about! Lots to find! Thankyou and Happy Weekend...

I've always used those lovely German paper calendars with the little doors. My kids love them. I wonder how hard it would be to make one and if the older kids could make one for the younger kids? Then, they are involved...just at a different level. I don't know if I'm artistically gifted enough to try such a project, but the idea intrigues me.

I was thinking you could get the teens involved in putting together the calendar, too. I know even my 11-year-old is getting more interested in doing the Mommy-behind-the-scenes stuff than she is in the magical discovery...

I love your Christmas Village idea! We have a fabric christmas tree calendar that comes out year after year. It has little pockets - every day you take out from the relevant pocket a little decoration to hang on the tree part of it. But I do rather love the old fashioned cardboard calendars too!

I also love the idea of a village! We always had the paper advent calendars that were a large house and every day you opened up a window to see some little scene. Sweet but not as interactively fun! I have a friend who's family has a mini tree just for the kids and every day they get to add a little ornament to it, that was pretty exciting too and it looked lovely by Christmas.

I'll bet you the teens would also love to put together the village. I don't think they ever outgrow doing 'cool' projects with the little ones.

From the perspective of a mum whose 21 year old son is no longer at home ( so a bit 'biased') I'd say, involve the teenagers - they'll have fown the nest before yo know it!
