Salty, Chocolately, Weirdly Wonderful

Making the peanut butter balls the other day got me started on a "no-bake" kick, and I remembered these odd bars, the recipe for which I'd cut from a Woman's Day magazine a year or two ago but still hadn't tried. I decided now is the time so whipped these up Friday afternoon. Odd they are, but quite good nonetheless. It's a "no-bake" brownie with pretzels throughout. What makes them especially odd though is the crushed up saltines they also contain. I like them quite a bit, but if I were to make them again I'd substitute cereal (like Rice Krispies or maybe crushed Cheerios) for the saltines and keep the pretzels of course. If you like a sweet/salty combo, as I do, try these. The recipe can be found here.
And I can't resist sharing a couple pictures from our weekend. This sweet boy loves his zucchini soup and literally asked for it for breakfast! He had it for lunch too. He insisted on feeding himself, thus the mess. Well worth it, though, and how else would he learn?
Both boys love flowers, and Dieter is learning to clip the deadheads. I made a special point of taking the boys outdoors early, before it got hot, for garden exploring and trampoline jumping. It was such fun.
Dieter with some selections from the summer reading basket, which has been a big hit with him. We're having a great weekend, hope yours is the same.

Wow - Rainer is getting so big! Of course he must feed himself . . . :)

They look so sweet in the garden.

Im so happy for Rainer!!! I have a 2 1/2 yr old nephew who's only now trying to eat by himself. I've copied the zucchini recipe and will be trying it soon. And given Rainer's good reviews of the soup (!!!!) I will pass it on to my sister-in-law so she can try with our nephew :) I love how the little ones can get out into the sunshine and enjoy nature. Here, we live in a concrete jungle and kids dont have a place to play, not even a park nearby :( I'd love to hear of any other great recipes you'd reccomend for the kiddies. Cheerio Mary Beth!

Oh, wow how fun for the kids to have such a garden where they can play and enjoy the summer afternoon!
Lovely!

Love your blog! We're going to try the zuchinni soup too.

Hint: for easier soup eating, have Rainer eat using a tablespoon measuring spoon instead of a normal spoon...my toddlers have always gotten more in their bellies than on their bellies that way!

Isn't that photo of Rainer just precious?? I like the position of his hand around the spoon with his finger sticking out ~ cute!

Dieter is a good 'reader' sitting so nicely and looking at his books.

The photo of the two boys outside together made me smile...it reminds me of my Luke and Patrick....

I am *so* making those bars, yum! We also just got another batch of zucchini from the fam so we'll be making the zucchini soup very soon, and the apple bread was fantastic with the apples from my yard :) Please keep sharing such lovely recipes!
