Scenes from a Pirate Potty Party

We had a little party over the weekend to celebrate Dieter being "all the way potty trained." I got the idea from Soulemama's book. She said that it is nice to mark these rights of passage with a little celebration. I loved that idea and potty training really is a big advance forward for a young person. This party wasn't a reward for potty training--I didn't even tell Dieter about it until the day before--but just a celebration of what a delightful child he is becoming. The pirate theme just evolved. Pirates are one of his many passions, so I decided to buy and make a pirate costume for him as a gift. Ken thought of a game to go with the theme and told a wonderful story in his best pirate voice--it was fabulous and Dieter just loved it. We also bought him a pirate song off of i-tunes to add to the theme.
The eyepatch, hat, and hook are from Nova. I made him the vest and a pair of black pants (not shown here). He loves them. Now I'm itching to make him more dress up clothes--a cape, a crown. He's totally into pretend. I remember Jacob and Faith both getting tons of mileage out of the dress up clothes. Of course I didn't save anything, being a tosser as I am.

Oh yeah, and the bottle? He still loves it (another of his passions). One right of passage at a time!

That last picture is priceless!! Even pirates need their bottles every one and a while!

I have to tell you what a wonderful, thoughtful mom you are.

Little confession about my parenting....when I have one child in some kind of crisis, I have occasionally not paid enough attention to the others.

I get fixated.

So I see you are not the same.

Despite Rainer's problems--although they are almost gone! Thank God!--you still knew to focus on Dieter, too.

I will try to learn from you.

Very inspirational. And FUN looking, too!!!!

Way to go, mom!

I keep seeing pirates! It must be because I've been painting pirates, a pirate family actually. I haven't quite finished it yet. I'm still agonising over the fine details of the faces, trying to make them look like my nephew & his parents, for his bedroom wall!

It's lovely to read your blog and all the efforts you make to be a good mother, & towards giving your children happy childhood memories.
