Before the Diagnosis

Before Rainer's diagnosis, I was experimenting with using fewer plastics in the lunches (hard!),
making Honey Health Bread from this book,
making whole wheat chocolate chip cookies,
and eating them (recipe posted here),
finishing this little piece of embroidery,
and ordering new fabrics from Sew Mama Sew. Love!

This morning we're off to the hospital in Santa Barbara again for Rainer's first clinic visit. This will be our routine for a long time--weekly clinic visits, then hopefully just monthly when his leukemia cells go away. Wednesday he has outpatient surgery (just to get some more bone marrow for testing--that will be happening a lot too). Little guy had a good weekend for the most part. His medicine gives him a huge appetite. It seems like he spent the whole weekend eating! (And nursing too, of course). It's the first Monday home of our new lives. Happy Monday.

Rainier is definitely blessed to have such a caring and concerned mother. And it's so great that you are still nursing him - it is so good for him, especially now!

Hi Mary Beth,
I have been thinking a lot about you and your family. I am so glad that you have special time with Rainer right now.
You are an inspiration.

Good for you going green and I do remember wax paper around my sandwiches, before plastic sandwich bags came out. Hope Rainer's clinic went well today. Love the cookie recipe, I may have to try that as I am a big fan of whole wheat grains. The embroidery and fabric is pretty.

My son's classmate was diagnosed with leukemia at the beginning of the school year. He's 3 years old. He's been having lots of ups and downs but overall has maintained his cheery little personality and is doing very well. This weekend we all went to an event called St. Baldrick's (www.stbaldricks.org) where 11 of his family members and friends had their heads shaved to show their support and raise thousands of dollars for children's cancer research. It was a very moving event. I'm sending lots of prayers your way.

Yes, Mary Beth, I guess it really is what they call the "new normal." Best to you. (and we've been doing semi-well with the just say no to plastic bags campaign!)

glad to hear he is eating well, that is a great thing. Once you get into this new rhythm you'll find ways to do all that other great stuff too...it'll be a sideline of course but in my mind's eye I can see you in the clinic waiting room with your beautiful embroidery...and sooner than you know it the clinic will be a distant memory... X

My thoughts will be with you tomorrow.

Good for you on the reduced plastics front - it's not easy but it's so worth it!

I like the look of your honey bread ...

Hope everything goes well today at the clinic. I think a hearty apetite is one of the best side effects I've heard of. Much better than the opposite anyway.

I love the embroidery piece!!
