Anyway, I'm happy to say I read and enjoyed a book.For my trip to the nursing conference I asked you guys to recommend books and I bought one of your recs (I Capture the Castle--thanks Florence), but I ended up reading Atonement instead because I picked it up at my mother's house while I was waiting for the other to arrive from Amazon and I just stuck with it. I have to say the first hundred pages were kind of slow going, and I was thinking about putting it down, but then I finally got sucked in. I ended up really enjoying it. I haven't heard much of the hype about the movie and such--just that it is supposed to be good, so I approached the book on sort of a "pure" level, not knowing what to expect. Basically it is about characters, which I like, and has lots of details and visual images of the time, and a love story. I like all of that. So I recommend it. And I really do want to see the movie now (may have to Netflix that when it comes out). Next up is I Capture the Castle.

I started Atonement, and put it down. Maybe I didn't get to page 100 yet, because it was pretty slow. I decided that I've read enough required (meaning "boring") books in my lifetime and that I'm not going to slog through anymore books just for the sake of finishing. I'll put it down and be guilt-free about it (or try to anyway).
That said, I'm currently reading The Grapes of Wrath. I read it in college, but it's been a few (!) years. I think the recent sour economic news made me want to read about a time when people truly had nothing but each other...

I just finished Atonement last month. I agree - it's a little slow at first, but it definitely picks up and makes for a great read. Alas, the movie got pretty poopy reviews. The story is so involved with what's going on inside the character's head, I'm not sure how they could actually translate that onto the screen, you know?
Oh, I also recently finished "The Book Thief" by Zusak. It's targeted for teens, but, wow, what adult themes. Very, very good book, too!
Oh no, I started Atonement and put it down after about 50 pages...so yes, the internet has possibly shortened my patience as well as my attention span, but I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it...and may even attempt to re-read it at some point now.
I do hope you enjoy Dodie Smith - although I think it is a very different sort of read from Atonement.
I tend to go in and out of phases with reading - at the moment I'm reading newspapers more than books, but I don't know why as I get so much more out of an amazing novel.

I loved Atonement. I read it this summer and its my choice for my book club's next read. It was definitely slow going at first but then it picks up speed! I'm rereading my childhood favourites at the moment.
I haven't read Atonement or seen the movie yet, but I like the book by Dodie Smith, it looks good. I am a huge Jane Austen fan so this one looks like a good read. I go in and out of reading, sometimes I go full force and read a few books in a row, then I just don't want to pick any up at all. I do enjoy having Netflix though. :-)
I bought that book awhile ago but I couldn't get into it and never finished. After reading your review, maybe I'll dig it up and try to finish it now. I'm surprised at how many of the commenters also started that book but never finished it!
Oh, Mary Beth! It's not just you! I always think the same thing. I've been trying to finish the same book for about 5 months now...of course, I'm probably "reading" about 6-7 books all at the same time! The other day I was packing up my books and realized that I had about 20 that I hadn't finished...some have even gone unopened since purchase. It's been on my mind to blog about, but I'll have to wait until I unpack them all. I'll make reading goals for myself!
As for Atonement, that is definitely one that I've been wanting to read, before I were to see the film.
I haven't seen the movie. But I thought about picking up the Atonement book.
I've read about several other bloggers reading this book - I love reading books that have been made into movies, though I often enjoy the book more than the movie.
And yes, the internet has definitely shortened my attention span. I even find myself opening up other windows to browse blogs while watching a movie on netflix. And I feel like I am reading so much online I often don't feel the urge to pick up the many books I would like to read or am in the process of reading.
I am definitely making your stickers this weekend! Yet another use for unflavored gelatin besides marshmallows.
