Ben's Birthday

The birthday month is winding down around here. Ben turned 15 on Sunday. I had just gotten in from San Diego late the night before, but Ben had graciously put in his "order" for sausage linguine and a chocolate Kahlua cake the week before, so I knew exactly what to do. Our tradition is that the birthday kid chooses the dinner and Ben always chooses the same. I like that.
Ben was only seven when I met him and wow, how the time has flown! He is so smart, always nice, and such a good big brother and a wonderful stepbrother to Faith. A couple weeks ago he spent well over an hour tutoring Faith in science for their final exam the next day. They have the same science teacher so it was a good review for both of them, but it is something that comes very easily to him and he was so generous with his time (even though it was his Tuesday to choose a movie--we never did get to it that night).
Happy Birthday Ben!
Here's the cake. This is a classic (old) recipe I got from my friend Sylvia years ago. Ben has always loved it.

Syl's Kahlua Chocolate Cake

1 package Devil's Food Cake Mix
4 eggs
1 c. sour cream
1 c. Kahlua
3/4 c. oil
1 c. chocolate chips

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients excep chips. Using electric mixer, bet at low speed to combine, then beat for 3-5 minutes at medium-fast speed. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour into greased and floured 10" bundt or tube pan.

Bake at 350 fro 55-60 minutes.

Cool in pan on rack for 30 minutes. Loosen from pan and invert, removing pan.

Cool completely before frosting.

My middle son, Griffin, just turned 15 yesterday- they're only one day apart in age.

Happy birthday, Ben! Thanks for the cake recipe! As soon as I read the name of the cake, I was going to ask for the recipe but you beat me to it.

Happy birthday to Ben! My older stepson is 15 as well. (the younger is about to be 13.)
Sort of like you, I met them when they were 5 and 7.
Our 15 year old is outside building a snowman as we speak with his 4 year old half-sister. Makes my eyes tear up a bit. Such a good kid!
Maybe I'll bake that cake for him just because he's so cool :)
