A Girl Named Noah and Other Random Bits

The other day at my school a former teacher came around to visit. He had a new wife and a baby with him and yes, their adorable girl baby was named Noah! I know I might be about to offend some of my blog readers, but I HATE this new trend of giving boys' names to girls. Hate it. And it seems to be hot right now. Two other baby girls at my school have boys' names--Brody and Jaden, and I've noticed it elsewhere too. For one thing, I don't think the parents are doing the girls any particular favors by giving them masculine names, but the thing that really irritates me is that the girls are stealing the names from the boys. Eventually these names that are being "stolen" won't seem masculine for the boys and men that have them. As a mom of mostly boys, I think they are entitled to strong masculine names and personally I would hate it if I chose a name for my male child that ended up seeming feminine. Just my little rant, sorry.
In other news, we have had a Seasons' Table upgrade. I've moved it from the little shelf where it started to a table in a corner of its own. Dieter and I are both really into the concept now and I felt it deserved a less cluttered area.
In thinking ahead to the winter table, I've been doing a little research. My books Earthways and All Year Round are both great resources for seasonal table suggestions. In winter the table might have rocks and crystals, evergreen boughs, of course, red roses, and also crafts such as angels or gnomes. Also you can force bulbs, which I think is a nice idea. The second book has lots of suggestions for making the table into an "advent garden" of sorts. I love fall, but it's winding down now and I'm looking forward to transforming this space into a winter space. Of course we won't get the winter weather to accompany it. Just the short days and chilly mornings.

My "week" is winding down. Only a half day today, then I'll come home to start cooking for tomorrow. Ken and the boys have had a nice time mostly, I think, even though the boys have not napped much for him. Yesterday they drove down and took me out to lunch then went to the children's museum and had a great time. Wish I could have gone too, but it's all good. We'll have to go soon as a family.

I actually fully agree on the boys name thing... I don't have any kids... but Jordo and I talk all the time about how there's more girls name we like than boys... but then we pointed out the other day that that really is why... tons of boys names now sound too feminine!!!! Anyhow, you said it right on!
Happy Thanksgiving!

What about names that were once traditionally boy's names (especially in the British tradition) that are now considered girl's names: e.g., Leslie, Evelyn and Lynn. Maybe what goes round comes round! :)

Yes, I think naming a girl Noah is going way too far!

My dh worked at a restaurant in college that had three male bartenders: Ashley, Kelly, and Stacy! Isn't that crazy?

Well what if you friend read this blog? He would be offended that you said you didn't like his daughters name? Or the choice he made. When I read the part about Dieter making cookies, I didn't know how to say his/her name. It sounds like a person on a Diet and then "er" put on the end. I couldn't tell if that was a boys name or a girls name. Just a thought....

My youngest son is named Riley- more and more you hear of that being used as a girls name.

As someone whose last name is now frequently used as a girl's first name, Lindsey, (something I find personally annoying because EVERYONE thinks it's my first name) I think name trends come and go. I have a friend whose maiden name is Jones and I think that would make a cute first name. (Plus it worked well with her last name.) She disagreed strongly.
And my daughter, only 16, claims that she will be naming my future granddaughter Fallopia. So,names...some we love, some we hate. I know, however, I will love little Fallopia. I might call her Fall.

Oh and I forgot...my sister is pregnant and probably going to name her new little baby boy Denver! I can hardly complain about geography names as I think Lindsey has those origins.
