Girl with a Pearl Earring

Girl with a Pearl Earring

I don't read (or finish) too many books these days (because I'm just so darn busy and overwhelmed with everything), but I do usually have some time on my lunch hour to read. I picked this book up at Bargain Box when Carrie and I were thrifting on her visit. I didn't know what to expect, but I figured, hey, it's 50cents. Well, I loved it. Not just because it takes you to a different time and place, which I tend to very much enjoy (even though I usually don't expect to) but also because the story is pretty darn compelling. Apparently this real artwork by this Dutch painter Vermeer is considered pretty mysterious--who is the girl, why are her lips parted, who is she looking at, and most of all, what is that thing on her head (which was nothing that the Dutch were wearing at the time). The author, Tracy Chevalier, said she was looking at the poster one day and the book just basically came to her all at once. She built a story about what might have happened, who the girl in the painting might have been. I loved it. Lately I've taken to lazily reading my magazines with lunch, but this held my attention and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Hi - Just a few more days of school for you! I have not read the book but I saw the movie which I liked. I've been reading the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. It's fun. And all my magazines! I apparently thought I'd have days at a time to read magazines. In any case, I do like getting them in the mail even if I seem to be letting them sit for awhile before they get read.

Yeah, I totally relate about the magazines. My next book is the Joy Luck Club. Another Bargain Box find. I read it in college but really don't remember any of it. I'd like to see the Girl with a Pearl Earring movie too.
